Alpine Bio
AI4Science & AI co-scientist consulting

Know what your AI scientist can actually do.

Benchmarks, readiness reviews and agent builds from a practicing biopharma bioinformatics leader. I help teams see where AI science agents are reliable, where they fail, and what humans still need to supply.

The readiness scale

Most teams are sold reasoning and receive automation.

L0

Single-step analysis

Ready

Runs code, documents it, returns reproducible output. Any capable model does this today.

L1

Workflow automation

Largely ready

Chains analysis steps, applies statistics consistently, adds independent agent review. Needs a good harness.

L2

Scientific reasoning

Not ready alone

Context-specific insight, spotting analysis blind spots, iterating on expert feedback. Needs human ground truth, context and judgment.

Every engagement starts by placing your use case on this scale. That tells us what to automate now, what to verify, and where a scientist must stay in the loop.

Services

Four ways to work together

Expert benchmarks and evals

Domain-expert tasks with grading rubrics and reference solutions that run end to end from raw public data, so your scores mean something.

For
AI-science and agent companies, evaluation teams
You get
Task sets, rubrics, reproducible notebooks, difficulty calibration
Format
Per batch

Co-scientist readiness review

An assessment of where AI agents fit your research workflows, where they need verified tools and context, and how to govern them.

For
Biotechs and research organizations adopting AI agents
You get
Readiness map, gap analysis, governance plan, priority pilots
Format
Fixed fee, 2 to 4 weeks

Agent build sprints

One working agentic workflow: verified analysis tools, your program context, human review gates, and outputs your scientists can audit.

For
Teams without an in-house AI group
You get
A running workflow, documentation, handover
Format
Fixed scope sprint

Technical diligence

An independent read on whether an AI-for-biology product does what it claims, tested against tasks a working scientist would set.

For
Investors and business-development teams
You get
A written memo with evidence and open risks
Format
Per memo
What an expert task looks like

Tests that catch the mistakes agents actually make

Generic benchmarks reward fluent answers. Expert tasks check the method: the right statistical test, the confounders, the claim the evidence can support. This example reflects a failure seen in real co-scientist runs.

QuestionBulk RNA-seq from 40 tumors, responders vs non-responders. Which genes associate with resistance?
HintRaw counts, not TPM. Treatment line and tumor purity differ between groups.
AnswerCount-based model (DESeq2 or edgeR) with line and purity as covariates; filter low-count genes; report FDR. A rank-sum test per gene fails the task.
DifficultyHARD
Illustrative example, not drawn from any client benchmark.
Approach

Three things humans must supply

Ground truth at scale

Verified, reproducible analysis code the agent calls instead of improvising. The agent's job shifts from computing answers to interpreting checked outputs.

Context

Your program priorities, past decisions and thresholds. Grounding agents in institutional knowledge turns generic output into answers for your pipeline.

Blind-spot review

Expert judgment on what was not asked, and on which claims overreach. Every finding is labeled for what it is: an association, a hypothesis, or a validated result.

About

Who you work with

Alpine Bio is the independent practice of a bioinformatics and clinical-evidence leader at a global biopharma company, who builds real-world-data platforms and agentic co-scientist workflows for drug discovery. You work directly with the founder, not a team of generalists. Full credentials are shared on the intro call.

  • Presented a framework for building more effective bioinformatics co-scientists at BACoS 2026.
  • Authored expert benchmark tasks and reproducible reference solutions for an AI-science company.
  • Built outcome-labeled real-world-data cohorts used for reverse translation into clinical programs.
  • Works across oncology, translational biology, spatial multi-omics and clinical evidence.
